Simple Things: Paperback Cover Reveal, Excerpt & Giveaway

Alright! Got the first actual excerpt from Simple Things for you guys today AND a big giveaway, with ARCs and signed paperbacks and swag bags! I'm so stoked! It's my first new title of 2016 and my first new title since last fall. It feels like it's been forever, even with the SUPER DUPER successful re-release of Good Enough (can't thank y'all enough for that!).

Conference SN: for those who will be at Rainbow Book Fair here in NYC in April, I'll be selling copies there. If you'd like one for RT in Vegas, get in touch with me before March 25th.

Gonna start with the gorgeous paperback cover reveal and blurb, then I'll go right into the excerpt, followed by the giveaway!

(cover art by JK Hogan @ KHD Graphics)

Carter Darling’s life has been a whirlwind since his mother was elected to the senate when he was a teen. From private school to joining the military, he tried to forge his own path while making as few ripples as possible. But an injury forced him to figure out new goals for his life. After his parents were involved a sex scandal, he decided to go back home to Tennessee to get some distance and get away from the madness.
He didn’t bargain on Jeremy Beck returning at the same time.
Jeremy was finally past the rich boy angst that made for some dramatic teenage years, but he hadn’t earned back much respect from his parents by playing in an indie band. Now that his band was on hiatus, Jeremy was looking for space from his unhealthy non-relationship with a band-mate, so returning home to figure out his next step seemed like the way to go.
Their initial reunion turned awkward. Carter was still holding on to hurts from their last meeting and Jeremy was trying to convince himself that Carter was still just his sister’s closeted little friend. But when they open up to one another again and decide a staycation fling would be a nice distraction, they may get more than they bargained for.
For two guys who’ve had so much drama in their lives, it might surprise them to find that sometimes love is found in the simple things. Who knew?

(Length: 50k words)

EXCERPT

“You can’t really be leaving,” Ella stated. “Isn’t there some big PR rule about not going MIA during scandals or you give the rumors power?”
Carter Darling snorted inelegantly and continued folding his shirts, placing them in his biggest suitcase. He didn’t plan on returning to New York City for quite a while.
“Besides, your parents are going to flip if you take a whole semester off.”
Carter turned on his friend and roommate then. “They get absolutely zero say in how I handle their problem. They made the problem, they can damn well fix it. I’m not going to play smiling trophy child while they do it.”
Ella huffed. “Well, you can’t leave me in a lurch with the rent. That’s not fair.”
“My trust is going to wire payments to the landlord, same as always.”
Ella pulled out her phone and started texting furiously as Carter went back to his packing. “Besides, it’s my parents’ names on the lease, so if you want to move out, you’re more than free to do so.”
She huffed behind him, again. He turned on her, again. “What the fuck’s it to you, anyway? You were all team Fuck the Darlings, now you’re …” He narrowed his eyes. “Shit. Did they ask you to keep me in town?”
She glared. “It’s nothing that nefarious. But Paul did call to see if I could talk you into backing down for a few days, see if you’d be there for your mother’s resignation speech.”
Should have known. Fucking Paul Buchanan wasn’t ready to give up his gravy train with the Darlings, yet. And Carter’s mother wasn’t ready to throw in the towel on her political career. The second coming of Hillary, they called Carrie Darling, Carter’s mother. Although, the Clinton scandal had been all on Bill. Both Carrie and Carter’s father, Wayne, had shot their political careers in the proverbial foot this time.
“How much are they paying you?”
Ella reared back. “That’s low.”
“Well, you had a price tag before when I decided to come out. What’d they get you this time?”
“Maybe,” Ella snapped, “I don’t want my friend to self-destruct. And don’t forget, you used my services as much as your parents did.”
“Let’s be clear. The only reason I let them do it was because my mom was getting ready for bigger things and I wasn’t ready to come out publicly.” Carter hated that he had to come out publicly. Most people got to just tell their folks and their friends and the hard part was over. But no. Not when your mother was the junior senator from Tennessee, looking to run for Governor and pass her seat on to your father.
They’d begged him to put off his official coming out for at least a year when he’d returned home for good, then pushed it back another six months after that. Only to have their own shit go public because they couldn’t be as “circumspect” as they’d insisted their shamefully gay son be.
“I can’t stay here. My whole life has been about them and their aspirations. I wanted to be honest, to come out. That was too much for them, though. They made me feel ashamed of myself. Now, I’m done feeling like shit, like I should hide. I want to go home and see my friends I haven’t seen in almost a decade. I want to be normal for five fucking minutes. I want to be out. I don’t want people thinking my best friend is my girlfriend.”
“What about—”
“Enough!” She blinked in surprise at his outburst. He was known for his level headedness. “Call Paul. You seem to be tight with him. And like I said, you can always move.”
“And you’ll what… come out and leave me to be the girl who got left for guys?”
Carter’s face heated, fury bubbling up inside him. “You always knew how this would turn out. It’s also why we never blatantly said we were dating. Plus, I’m small potatoes. I’m not some rock star’s kid. This’ll be a blip for a week or two, then they’ll focus on my parents.”
“You’re an idiot if you think that,” she said, crossing her arms. Carter felt the sadness settle deep in his bones. His body felt as if he’d deflated, his shoulders drooping. He’d been going non-stop since everything blew up in the Darling family’s collective faces less than twenty four hours ago. He hadn’t had to really think about his next move. He just called up an old friend from back home and she’d offered him shelter from the storm, even if he hadn’t kept in touch with her so well since he had started college three years earlier.
He didn’t want to fight with Ella, but he hadn’t really considered the fallout for her. He’d been so absolutely done from the moment the headlines about his parents started rolling in, he’d made a plan without much more than a text to his parents saying “so long” and “fuck this.”
Ella’s own posture lost its rigidity and she looked embarrassed. “Oh god, Carter. I’m sorry.” He held his arms out to her and she came into his embrace willingly. “Oh, how I must have sounded.”
He sighed, resting his chin on her shoulder. He wasn’t much taller than her, standing only five foot nine to her five foot seven. “No, I was a dick. I didn’t even think.”
“No. Don’t feel bad. It’s been so crazy the last couple days, I got so wrapped up in the clean-up frenzy and didn’t even think about how much this sucks for you.”
He hummed and pulled out of the hug, returning to his packing. “I can’t smile for them, not after they’ve been so cold and morally superior, making me feel like I was less-than because I dared to want to come out.” He turned to her. “I don’t want to judge them for this, but it’s hard.”
“I know,” Ella said, still shamefaced. “It’s weird, too. She’s a part of the liberal party. I still don’t really get how you coming out would have mattered.” That was a lie, though. He’d met Ella in school, but she’d interned with his mother—who said nepotism was dead?—so she had probably gotten polls and bullet pointed memos as to why Carter should keep his mouth shut. He’d sure gotten those things.
Carter frowned. “It matters. I did kind of get it. A little.” He scowled. “Fuck! See, I’m taking up for them already. I gotta… I need time away.”
She studied him closely before giving a decisive nod. “Okay. But promise me you’ll only take spring semester off. That’s eight months to get your shit together and to let this stuff with your parents blow over. If you stay out too long…”
“I can live off my trust fund.” He winked to let her know he was teasing. That was something he’d never do. He’d worked too hard to get the respect of not only his teachers, but people he’d met in the boxing world. They thought a rich kid wouldn’t cut it, but he’d busted his ass over the last several years to prove that he had the chops. He didn’t even want to think about how he’d be losing all that respect once his coming out was official.
One crisis at a time.
After a final trip to the closet and double checking that he had put his electronics in his messenger bag, he zipped up his suitcase and pulled on his favorite Yankees ball cap.
“Do you want me to call for the car service?” Ella asked, waving her phone. She had plopped down on the foot of his bed, looking as ragged as he felt. Her blond curls were going a thousand directions after having run her fingers through it too many times, as she was prone to do when she was nervous or frustrated. He was going to miss her, but part of him was glad to be getting away from Ella. She was his friend, once-upon-a-time his very best friend, but since she’d put her name on the dotted line of a non-disclosure agreement with Buchanan & Associates, she’d become part of The Darling Machine. Carter had put up a wall between them after that, for which he now felt guilty. It was just another reason why he really needed a break.
A very long break.
He hadn’t had one at all since his time in the Army had been cut short, then he’d had rehab for his bad knee and immediately started school. It’d been a whirlwind since he had graduated high school.
“No,” said Carter. “I wouldn’t put it past them to have instructed the car service to drive me to D.C., and no fucking way am I sitting in the same room with them. Not today.”
“Carter. They’re your parents.”
“And I’m an adult. Adults don’t have to talk to their parents when their parents fuck up.”
She grinned. “Very adult response.”
“Whatever,” he said, surly.
“Be careful, Ells. Call Paul after my flight, please? I fly out in two hours so… please wait ‘til then.”
“I will,” Ella said on a sigh.
With that, Carter grabbed his suitcase and wheeled out, then down the elevator, and out onto 2nd Avenue, where he held his hand out to hail a cab. After depositing his suitcase in the trunk and telling the driver to head to LaGuardia, he dropped his head back against the seat and took the first deep breath he had taken since he’d woken the day before to a world gone mad.

✰COVER ART CONTEST, YO!✰

Hey all!

I decided to do something new this time. I HOPE it's something people will be interested in participating in and not just a bunch of "whatever Kade" haha. I'm doing a cover art contest for my next book, Simple Things, which will be released in January. I'm SUPER excited about the book and about this contest. (Just so you don't stop reading if you're a pro, I'm NOT trying to get a free cover, I will be paying the winner's usual custom cover & ad pack fee as well as giving prizes to the winner)

After 17 books and a few shorts, I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the most FABULOUS fucking cover artists in our genre (and tried out some from outside the genre). I'm a cover whore and a shameless cover snob. The packaging of a book, IMHO, goes as far toward selling a book as my name, the blurb, and reviews. It's the first thing readers see and I'm so privileged to have had so many wonderful covers. Our cover artists in M/M are so ridiculously talented. It's always so hard because they're awesome and I see new awesome artists and I'm like "Can I just do 15 covers?" But that could get pricey... and confusing for readers haha. So I thought it'd be awesome to see their ideas as well as ideas from anyone else who wanted to throw their hats in. I don't care if you're just starting out and you're trying to get your name out, if it's your first cover, or if you've been doing it forever: I wanna see your mock-up.

If you're interested, keep reading. The contest is running over the next 2 weeks, until December 7th. I promise I'm not a diva so I really am not terribly fussy with this. Cover art is your forte so I don't have a shit-ton of notes. If you're interested, the story / character specs are posted below in a cover request form style.

So, these will be a little rambling but... here goes.

 here's what's up:
1) There's no max on entries. Send 1, send 5. Up to you.
2) I tend to favor at least one model on the cover, love 2, but I'll look at anything. If a "concept" cover blows me away I'm all over it. From standard 2 models over a cityscape to single model being sexy to a picture of a tattoo, or personal art (ie drawing, digital art, etc). I wanna see YOUR take and what YOU can do.
3) I like neat covers that aren't SUPER busy.
4) I will be choosing the cover myself. No one aside from me will see your mock ups or your cover until I've chosen you and paid you.
5) Obviously, I don't expect you to spend money since it's not a sure thing, so I totally understand these may not be the final look b/c they may have watermarks, etc.
5) I may do the book in paperback so it'll help if you can do full covers and maybe FB banners, though it's not a requirement.

the winner:
1) I pay you 100% of your usual fee, of course. (Anyone who does personal art or is good with teasers, I'd pay extra for those as well.)
2) I will pimp the shit out of you on FB, twitter, cover reveals, blog tour stops, and your name will be listed as a contributor on Amazon and in the book copyright page.
3) You get a $50 Amazon Gift Card from me, as well as an ARC of this book when they're ready, a print copy (if you want) and any other of my backlist books you'd like.

the cover request specs:

BOOK TITLE: Simple Things

AUTHOR NAME: Kade Boehme

THE STORY: The gist -- childhood friends come home to stay on one's family horse farm in Tennessee, each because life's gotten complicated—one because things with his band are a mess, the other hiding from the fall out of his politician parents' sex scandal. Both are still finding their way, suffering growing pains, amidst coming out and insecurities. Both have many decisions to make, and while the bad boy and the virgin decide to embark on a mutually beneficial friends-with-benefits situation, their friendship becomes more, making those decisions harder.

TIME PERIOD: Contemporary

SETTING: New York City & Chattanooga, Tennessee (most of the story in TN)

MOOD/THEMES: Romantic, Coming of Age, Sexy, Angsty, but lower angst, Hopeful, addiction, happy ever after

HERO I: Jeremy Beck: 24. Taking time off from his indie band because of personal issues amongst the members. Caught in a strange menage with male bandmate and his girlfriend. Was an addict as a teen, but now is clean. His parents disapprove of his wild child bullshit, which they consider typical rich boy angst.

Physical description from story: "He’d always had classic good looks, but now, at twenty-four, he was a walking wet dream. His shoulders and arms had filled out, as had his chest. His tight fitting white tee showed off a trim waistline and flat stomach. Carter was surprised, though, at the amount of visible ink the man sported now. Most every inch of visible skin had a tattoo. He had sleeves and knuckle tattoos. His neck was covered. He even had one swooping cursive word over his right eyebrow.
Carter tried his best not to stare, but as Jeremy walked through the kitchen in his skin-tight black jeans it was hard not to notice the nice swell of the man’s ass and his shapely calves and thighs. He still walked with a certain swagger that was all his own, and fucking sexy. His jeans were rolled up a bit showing off bare ankles above his ratty old converse that had been signed and doodled on with sharpies in every white spot available.
A dark James Dean with thick black hair and a rockabilly style, Jeremy was a trainwreck but he was one beautiful fucking hot mess."

HERO II: Carter Darling, 21. Politicians' son who took a bit of time off schooling in NYC and away from his parents' sex scandal to go spend time in his Tennessee hometown with friends. Amateur boxer, preppy, technical virgin who's JUST coming out. Because of parents' career is fairly goody-goody. His wild side is all in the ring, until Jeremy gets his hands on him.

Physical description from story: "Carter Darling had always been almost as precious as his last name with his soft face, marble smooth white skin that looked as if it never saw the sun, bright red hair in a short pompadour, and large, open blue eyes, and easy blush. Now, though, he seemed harder.
Definitely in the literal sense Carter was harder. His jaw had squared and his muscles were cut, not an ounce of excess fat to his strong, athletic frame. Jeremy knew Carter had taken up boxing and his training had definitely paid off. He looked older, stronger, and even more lickable than Jeremy remembered.
But he still had that shiny spark in his eye that was very Carter."

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS: Politics, Jeremy's black Fender FA-100 guitar, tattoos, amateur boxing, college

picspiration:

Jeremy

**I obviously do not own rights to these photos,
but used these men loosely for description
in the story. No, it's not Canelo fanfic. Also, I
understand models won't look just like these.

The winner will be chosen ON December 7. Don't wait til the last minute, though, if possible. That's 2 weeks for you to get anything in you'd like, and as much as you'd like. Please e-mail your mockups (can be more than one e-mail) and your usual price points/fees. I've paid the gamut of fees for covers so you won't scare me off, though a warning if you used original work that costs more from you will keep me from being like WTF?!

E-MAIL ALL ENTRIES HERE: KADEBOEHMEWRITES@GMAIL.COM

Looking forward to see what y'all come up with—assuming anyone even enters haha. THAT could be embarrassing. Either way, thanks for taking the time to read all this.

Much Love,

Borrowing Trouble Snippet & Reader Appreciation Giveaway

HEY GUYS!

So, I am BLOWN AWAY by the sales and fabulous reviews for Borrowing Trouble. I was super nervous about how Landon & Jay's laid back small-town story would go over and goddamn has it exceeded any expectation I ever could have had. Y'all... You leave me speechless.

So. I'll let a giveaway speak for me.

First, for those who haven't read it yet, I've got one last snippet for you guys. It's 100% NSFW, but it's one of my favorite Jay moments in the book. Then stick around for the giveaway and enter for your chance to win paperbacks, swag, and gift cards!

Okay, so the snippet is Jay and Landon's second time being together. While Jay's feeling all these new things, he also has decided to take it, to enjoy being with Landon.

Landon hummed his pleasure as he sucked and kissed on Jay’s chest and collar bones, wrapping those big, strong hands around the small of Jay’s back, then dipping into Jay’s jeans.
And that was the biggest difference, the thing that made Landon so addictive. Jay felt worshipped. He felt Landon’s touch, the way it felt like he was actually being touched for the first time, all the way from his balls to this scary place deep in his chest.
“Oh, Landon,” he said on a breath as Landon kissed his chin, then his cheek. Landon moved his hands to Jay’s fly and undid it before pushing his pants and his underwear down. They both chuckled nervously as Jay tripped up a little.
“Sit on the bed,” Landon directed. Jay did as he was told and Landon kneeled before him, pulling off his boots and pants, one leg at a time. Jay’s cock rose proudly, hard and red-tipped. Landon ran his stubbled cheek all along Jay’s inner thighs, over his balls. Jay shuddered, his balls drew up.
“Damn,” Jay hissed. “That’s so strange, but it’s hot as hell.” The pleased look in Landon’s eyes was precious to Jay. He was glad, he wanted to please Landon.
Landon opened his mouth and took Jay in hand, patting the head of Jay’s cock on his tongue. It was equally the most obscene and hottest thing he’d ever seen.
“Want me to suck it?” Landon asked, stroking Jay’s cock, then kissing Jay’s leg.
“Please,” Jay begged, voice cracking. Landon smirked. Then he sucked the head in, running his tongue around the crown, still stroking with the other hand. Jay leaned back, placing his hands on the mattress behind him. “God, that’s so good.”
Landon gave an mmmmm and started sucking harder, his pretty lips stretched obscenely on Jay’s thick cock, his blond head bobbing up and down. Jay’s breath quickened, his skin feeling too tight over his whole body.
He felt the same steady jerking of Landon’s body as last time and realized Landon was pleasuring himself.
Jay reached out to stop Landon’s sucking, though he was loathe to do so. “Stop, stop.”
Landon pulled back, surprised. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I was… I was close to finishing. But I don’t want it like last time. I want to touch you too.” Landon looked even more surprised, which made Jay feel like a jerk.
He pulled Landon up on top of him and kissed him until Landon had to pull back to breathe.
“Landon, don’t take crumbs, okay. You deserve more.”

Borrowing Trouble
by Kade Boehme
Now Available!

After an amicable divorce, Jay Hill decided to move back to his rural hometown with his teenage kids. Being on good terms with his ex-wife and in laws has made the transition into single life pretty smooth. Things were good and uncomplicated. Then Landon Petty walked into his life.

Landon didn’t expect to still be stuck in his hometown working at his dad’s sawmill at this point in his life. Being an openly gay truck driver was as awkward in practice as in description. When Jay came to take over managerial duties at his dad’s business, Landon was surprised to find a friend. When Jay turns out not to be as straight as he thought, things get complicated.

When feelings for Landon shine a light on how much Jay’s life has been actually half lived, he’s forced to decide if he’ll jump in with both feet or if he’ll let Landon slip through his fingers.

Borrowing Trouble: Word Wednesday & Final Day of Rafflecopter!

Hey guys!

So this is it. The LAST day of the Refflecopter that has prizes like ARCs and paperback copies of Borrowing Trouble, as well as backlist eBooks. So when you're done reading today's Word Wednesday snippet, make sure you enter for your chance. AND there's still 5 days left to enter my Crazy Rainbow Book Fair NYC Trip Giveaway Extravaganza. (Yeah, that gets called something different every time I pimp it haha)

So. Only this Word Wednesday and a Snippet Saturday to go til RELEASE DAY! I'm SOOO excited.

I may even have a surprise on Snippet Saturday to entertain everyone who couldn't make it to GRL this year. So I'm just gonna jump right into the snippet.

In this snippet, it's a few days after Landon & Jay have hooked up for the first time. Jay's having a little trouble wrapping his mind around things, as a 36 year old man who's never really explored his true feelings for other men before. Landon has a little suggestion....

Landon almost passed out from nerves and need and hope when Jay was suddenly there in his face, hands on both sides of Landon’s neck. “I can’t get you out of my head. And I can’t stop wanting you. And I don’t want to hurt you. And all I could think about was talking to you.” Jay studied Landon’s face, eyes darting around desperately. “Sending you home the other day was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And I mean ever.”
Landon’s tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth and his eyes welled up. God, he couldn’t do this. Jay couldn’t make promises, but Landon couldn’t help wanting them.  He’d never ached for someone like this, body and soul. He’d never wanted to help someone so much. He feared he might break from it.
“Jay,” Landon whispered. Jay pressed his mouth to Landon’s, and Landon’s whole body sang as he was pushed back into a shelf. The wood dug into his back, but Landon didn’t care as he gripped Jay’s forearms and sucked on his tongue.
They kissed like that for a few moments, Landon feeling lost to the man, until Jay pulled back, wide-eyed. The wonder there gutted Landon. Could Jay really have repressed himself that long and that hard?
“Jay, I have to go soon.” He hated to leave, but he was already behind schedule and he needed to clear his head, which would never happen trapped in that small room with Jay.
Jay reluctantly dropped his hands. “Yeah.” His voice was rough until he cleared his throat. “I’m sorry. I’m losing it.”
“No. Don’t apologize.”
“I don’t want to use you. You just put me at ease. It’s like having Sammy or…” He flushed again. They didn’t have time to get into any more random word vomit now.
“I think your head and your heart need a break,” Landon said. He reached out and gave in to the need to rub the place where Jay’s brows knitted together. “I’m going to give you an option. It’s up to you whether or not to take it.”
Another dubious look from Jay made Landon chuckle. “Okay.”
“So, I’m willing to be your sounding board. I’m not going to judge you.” He sighed. “I’ll be honest, I think about you a lot too. But I want what you think is best for you. I know you have a lot at stake. Just know, my door is open. I’ll be home tonight. Your kids are away. If you want to come to my house and just hang out or talk. I’ll even kiss you again if you twist my arm. But you have to make that choice.” He took the chance, in case it was his last, to run a hand down the side of Jay’s face, rubbing his thumb over those thinned lips. “If you don’t, I won’t be angry. I won’t cry in my beer. I’ll understand.” I hope. “We can be civil and pretend nothing happened. Or you can nut up and figure your shit out.”
Jay’s eyes widened in surprise.
And Landon left it at that. No goodbye kiss. He pulled his hand away and straightened his shirt and ball cap, then left with as much dignity as he could.
He knew he’d done the right thing, but he wanted to beg Jay to come over. Which was dumb because not twenty-four hours ago he was determined he should be done with it all. But if there was a chance, even at just helping Jay figure his shit out, he’d take it.
Or maybe he’d just been lonely too long and felt that connection with Jay. Fuck.

He’d see tonight.

Borrowing Trouble: Snippet Saturday, Paperback Cover Reveal & Giveaway

Heya guys! WOW sooo much going on this month. And this is another ALL THE THINGS kinda post too, haha. Got the paperback cover reveal AND the first Snippet Saturday! So I'll just jump right in.

First, the FABULOUS Elizabeth Mackey hooked up this cover so TODAY I'm revealing the paperback cover for you guys <3. I'm so very excited.

Gah she nailed this cover. It makes me SOOO happy.

Next order of business. The giveaway I'm doing with Diverse Reader Blog is nuts and it's going SO well, so if you haven't heard about it or haven't gotten your video in, make sure you do! You've got until October 18th, winner being announced on Borrowing Trouble's release day (October 20th).

Okay, so now. Starting Snippet Saturdays (which we know sometimes will be Snippet Sundays. I was just eager for this first one! (This is unedited, as my editor Heidi is still powering away on edits so I used this from the 1st draft) This one's a little longer than the others will be.

First, I'll say, you're probably gathering that this story is VERY southern. I definitely went hard on the small town thing, based near where my family lives actually. In this scene, Jay and Landon have been hanging out a few weeks, watching football, just kicking it. Jay only recently discovered Landon might be gay and it's got his brain clicking and turning in disconcerting ways. When Landon stops by and offers to help with some yard work, things get even more... hot. And it ain't just the southern weather.

JAY changed into his work boots and a ratty old Budweiser t-shirt. He’d only just pulled the push mower out and slid on his cowhide gloves when a familiar F-250 trundled up his gravel driveway.
His first instinct was to tense up, but the smile that stole across his face betrayed him. His subconscious was really starting to piss him off.
And scare the shit out of him.
“Yo!” Landon shouted in greeting as he hopped down from his lifted truck.
“You know those lift-kits make you look shorter, right,” Jay teased, trying to get out of his head. Which turned out to be a mistake because his mouth ran away with him. “Overcompensating for something?” Don’t joke about the man’s dick size!
Landon just laughed at that. Of course he did. His head tossed back, face beaming with amusement. “Old man’s got jokes.” Landon walked over to Jay and pulled off his ball cap. “How’s it going?”
“It’s going. Kids just left. Thought I’d do some work around the place.”
“You’re nicer than my old man. He saved all the chores for when I was home.”
Jay let out a hmph. “My kids are better than most, I won’t lie. But we spoiled ‘em, raising them in town like we did. If I want house work done right, I’m better off doing it myself.”
“Kids today,” Landon said, shaking his head in mock shame. “Who’d’ve thought you’d be a soft-touch dad?”
Jay scoffed. “I’m no such thing.”
“Whatever you say.” Landon surprised Jay by pulling a pair of old cowhide gloves out of his back pocket. “Saw you were working so I grabbed these. Mostly came over to check you were still coming tomorrow night. But if you want a hand around the place I don’t mind.”
Damn Landon Petty. Damn him to hell, because right as Jay tossed all the strange shit in his mind around, as he tried to keep himself from thinking on things that confused him so much, Landon had to just… Be Landon. A good man, a good friend, who no-questions-asked was willing to pitch in just because Jay was his friend, and he knew Jay was doing it alone. Even after Jay had been squirrelly around him the last couple of days. And that undefinable feeling settled in Jay’s gut again, making him smile, but tremble a bit because maybe… Just maybe the feeling was slowly and inexplicably becoming more defined.
“I’m sure you got better things to do with your Friday afternoon.”
Landon cocked his head, still with that friendly smile, and shrugged. “Not really. What better way than to help out a neighbor?”
“You live ten miles away.”
“Well, you’re my parents’ neighbor.” True enough, Landon’s parents were the next house down the way, about three ponds, a couple pastures and two miles.
“In the loosest sense of the word.”
“Fine. Helping out a friend.” Landon’s words held a weight to them that surprised Jay. He also felt a warmth he wasn’t entirely comfortable with. He remembered all too well what having a crush on Bethany had felt like; the newness and the need at fifteen had been overwhelming. This feeling wasn’t quite that, but he wasn’t a hormonal kid. And this started in his chest, not his dick.
And what. The. Hell.
He realized Landon’s brows had risen and he’d begun shifting uncomfortably. And he couldn’t tell the man to fuck off. He didn’t want Landon to leave.
He also didn’t want Landon in his face, right then, either. “Uh, yeah. Yes. Sure. Thanks.” He motioned with his hand for Landon to follow him. “I appreciate it.” He only half meant it.
He led Landon into his detached, tin-sided carport and dug out the weed-eater. “The oil-gas mix for this is in that orange can over there. If you don’t mind getting around the flower beds.”
“That’s what you call those dirt piles?”
“Look now,” Jay said, laughing as he handed over the weed-eater. “I had other stuff to get around to before I could do anything with the beds.” Truthfully, he didn’t know the first thing about annuals and what-not.
“Shame. Some gladiolas would look nice over there.”
Jay smirked at Landon who scowled. “Mama made me help her in the beds every year.” The defensiveness in his tone made Jay drop that line of teasing. It also brought up stereotypes to things his fragile hold on the moment couldn’t even handle.
“Well, if you don’t mind doing that,” he continued like they’d not made that detour in conversation, “I’ll do the lawn. It usually takes me about two hours.” His yard wasn’t too large, dwarfed by some of the neighbors’, but still took time with his finicky old push mower.
“Alright. I’ll get on it.” And they did. Jay’s mind was blissfully quiet as he handled his task. The repetitive motions of walking in circles with the rattling mower calmed him. He’d always enjoyed working in the yard. Just being outside gave him a sense of peace, and nothing beat that smell of fresh cut grass.
At some point, while dodging an old ant bed, he happened to glance over, noticing Landon. Damn the man to hell. Landon had lost his shirt at some point. The plaid button down draped over the railing on the front porch as Landon moved the weed-eater over the side of one of the large flower beds that flanked each side of the front porch.
Jay almost tripped right there. He wasn’t entirely sure whether he’d tripped over the mower, the ant bed, or his traitorous tongue. Landon’s smooth, powerful back flexed with his movements, sweat rolling down from his blond hair, over his neck and down toward the rise over his ass.
Jay blinked, unsure when a man’s ass had become something he couldn’t look away from but there it was, two firm, round buns barely contained in Landon’s threadbare 501s. When Landon moved just so, you could see his broad shoulders and rounded biceps bunch, showing off their power, their strength. And Jay could see in his mind’s eye his own body wrapping around Landon’s from behind, rubbing his cock against that firm ass, running his fingers over those shoulders. A trembling breath left his body as his body suddenly yearned to feel another person’s skin against his own.
He’d never yearned like that before. And it almost made him weep with loneliness.
The lawn mower shutting off snapped his attention back to reality and his nerves roiled so hard he felt like he could vomit, suddenly. Landon turned his way, and his marble smooth, hairless torso gleamed with sweat in the afternoon sun. His muscled chest and smooth stomach were something you’d expect to see in a magazine, a level of physical perfection Jay had never once possessed. He wasn’t anything to throw rocks at, not paunchy or anything, but he was softer around the middle like anyone in their late thirties who didn’t have time to live in a gym. His own torso was also hairy, nothing like the near baby-smoothness of Landon’s.
The only imperfection was one dark brown mole just below Landon’s left nipple. And nipples… Now Jay couldn’t stop looking at Landon’s large round nipples that were a pretty shade of pink. Perfect for sucking on.
He swallowed thickly as Landon titled his head.
“You okay?”
No. No fucking way. I’m losing my damn mind. Jay had to swallow again to get words out, wondering why in the hell he was hard for a man, why he wanted to bad to wrap his arms around a man.
“Yeah. I’m fine,” Jay croaked. “Think I need a break.”
It had to just be residual effects of seeing his ex and having not gotten laid in so damn long. Right? He wasn’t a teenager by any means, but men had needs and eventually they started making a man act a fool.
“Want me to go grab a beer?” Landon asked. Jay, grateful for a moment to get his shit together, sent Landon off to do just that.
He made his way to one of the rocking chairs on his front porch, trying to get his racing heart under control, but failed because again, he felt a strange warmth from Landon feeling at home in his house, Landon being so… Domestic.
“Here you go,” Landon said, passing Jay a beer. Jay took it and chugged, happy not to have to talk for a minute.
“Damn, it’s hot for November,” Landon complained.
